Anxiety, a common companion in modern life, often arises from various sources. In the past, we believed anxiety stemmed from external factors such as financial struggles, job dissatisfaction, or unfulfilled relationships. However, even those who are married, successful, or financially well-off experience their fair share of worries. As entrepreneur Wang Shi aptly put it, the anxiety of how to spend one’s wealth can be just as daunting.

It may sound paradoxical, but one undeniable truth stands out: anxiety is the great equalizer. Since we cannot entirely rid ourselves of anxiety, it’s crucial to ponder one question: How do we live with it?

    Understanding Anxiety

From a sensory standpoint, anxiety is far from pleasant. It brings restlessness, unease, and even physical symptoms like a racing heart and trembling hands. Instinctively, we shun anything that makes us uncomfortable. However, moderate anxiety can be beneficial.

The greatest advantage of anxiety is its ability to push us beyond our comfort zones. The comfort zone is where we feel most familiar and at ease. Yet, dwelling there indefinitely restricts our growth and confines us to a limited realm of possibilities. To truly progress and become stronger, we must step out of this zone. Anxiety serves as a driving force in this endeavor.

Excessive, inappropriate anxiety, on the other hand, can be problematic. People who suffer from chronic anxiety often struggle with an intolerance for life’s uncertainties. They neither accept their own imperfections nor tolerate outcomes that don’t align with their desires.

For instance, a person may hesitate to express their affection for fear of rejection, or a salesperson may fret over a potentially lost deal with a client. The fear of traffic on the way to the airport can also induce anxiety.

Psychological research affirms that this absolutist mindset, driven by unrealistic expectations, significantly diminishes one’s quality of life. Therefore, those dealing with anxiety must first adjust their attitude toward life’s uncertainties. They must allow for the occasional twist of fate and accept the possibility of making mistakes.

In this regard, children can serve as our finest teachers. As toddlers take their first steps, they tumble often, yet they remain unfazed. Similarly, when they begin speaking, they may utter nonsensical words without a hint of anxiety. They approach learning with joy, stumbling upon knowledge as they go.

This insight underscores a crucial lesson: deviations and errors are not to be feared. The consequences are limited, and we always have opportunities for rectification or balance through other means.

The Path to Victory Over Anxiety

In practical life, the key is not how many wrong turns we take but rather the determination to keep exploring. The more you explore, the more mistakes you might make. Paradoxically, this increases your chances of success compared to those who fear making mistakes and avoid taking action.

Understanding this, you’ll realize that the best way to defeat anxiety is not evasion but confronting it head-on. When you’re uncertain about your next move, focus on doing the best you can with the tasks at hand. When you’re unsure where to begin, start with the closest task. No questions, no hesitation, no turning back. If you’re committed to your chosen path, mistakes are just momentary setbacks; success is inevitable.

Life’s logic sometimes works in reverse. The more you yearn for something, the more you seem to lose. Anxiety often attracts the very things that worry you. In contrast, when you face life fearlessly, many problems become stepping stones toward your achievements.
